On the whole it was a fun and exposure trip especially for someone like me who has never ever visited Malaysia!
On the last day of the conference we attempted for the second time to get the certificate.
Though I did not get any certificate, I was so happy that Benjamin got it!
Seriously, at least someone in the team get one!
Despite the fact that I failed the test, I find myself knowing more about what Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is.
Such as encapsulation, loose coupling and also re-usability are some of the few features of SOA.
Mr Teo taught us what is important points to take note of while preparing for the paper and what we should do.
I read up on my own about SOA from Wikipedia and develop interest in learning more of the products that was featured in the lectures we attended!
I had never regretted signing up for the trip. I am really grateful for having the chance to be exposed to the outside world, getting a feeling of what a professional conference will be like.
Besides all the fun I had, learning and hearing the experience from the professionals are valuable assets for me.
Before I end, I really would like to thanks Mr Teo for taking care of us especially on the bus when I had motion sickness. Thank you!

IBM conf to an end.
Is a joy to be able to finally touchdown on Singapore. Though it is very late, but at least we are back. IBM has finally come to an end. Looking through the notes, it is indeed a fruitful experience as we learned not only IBM products but also the reason why these products were birthed. Software programming and analyzing surely look fun and interesting. It will once again be a time of homework and projects but that is life. Every banquet comes to an end. Hope what we gained (I.e. technical terms and software analysis) will be an asset to Singapore Poly. As we continue to engage the class in sharing sessions over lunch, lets hope we can make a difference to those not able to participate.

IBM Finale
On the night of the third day, our lecturer Mr Teo gave us a fast lecture on SOA. He basically gave us a crash course on the important facts and the gist of SOA so that we can at least know some basic of SOA before we actually go and retake the SOA fundamentals test. The basic lecture he gave all of us made me have a brief understanding of SOA and how it works. Even though it was a crash-course, I feel that it is very beneficial as I can actually learn about SOA in a short period of time and even understand them.
In the morning, I bodingly went to take another test on SOA fundamentals. I was very satisfied with my performance as I had improved my score by 18%, however, I still did not make it to the certification. Taking the IBM test is really a wonderful experience, I could actually feel the amount of knowledge that a person must know in order to pass the test. It is not easy to take an IBM test certification and I have learnt a lesson that I must not go and try to attempt another IBM test without proper/basic knowledge on the products and systems.
The various lectures I attended for the rest of the day were more on the product-based lectures where they tell us more on the special features of their new products. From this lectures, I learnt that the new versions of the products and their previous version, how they are improved and what are the main areas that they improved on. I feel that this is quite useful as I now know what to focus on if I want to improve an existing product. The speakers also taught on how to use the new products. Although I do not really need to use these products in the near future, I feel that it is still a good thing that I learn, so that I can at least have a little experience and basic knowledge on the product.
Time to go home, I was disappointed that we had to leave already even before the whole conference is officially closed and that I had to miss the last lecture which was a sharing session with the experts which I was interested in. Although it was a short three day conference, I had benefited from this conference. Not only did I learn new technology and software, but also some basic skills like problem dissecting and others.

Reflections/ 3rd Day conference
After studying, we decided to take up the test once again in the morning. After breakfast, we headed to the "examination hall" to register. The test was a little easier after Mr Teo gave us some just-in-time lecture but I still failed in the end. Though I did improve. After the test, we attended another lecture on omnibus before having our lunch. Later on, we finally had to return to Singapore. On the bus, I was practically sleeping the whole time as I was really tired from studying the previous night.
Overall, I felt that this trip was a good experience. Although I had difficulty trying to catch up, I still found the experience good as I get to experience learning from IBM's people and also the way these conferences are conducted. I would definitely attend another conference like this if I had the chance.

Last Day
After studying for the entire night, we went to sleep at 3am+. We decided to take the certification test for Service oriented architecture(SOA) in the morning because we feel that there will be little people wanting to take the test in the morning. The queue for the test turned out to be so long that some of us fell asleep while waiting. For the test, I got lucky and managed to pass the test. I was soooooo happppyyyy~~~
After the test, we decided to go for a workshop about the new features of Omnibus. The speaker told us the new features in the product and also explained in detail sometimes. I found the lecture very boring as I have no previous knowledge about Omnibus.
Before the bus ride, we actually wanted to talk and play some games on the bus. However, the late sleeping time and early waking up time caused me to sleep on the bus for almost the whole duration.
Overall, I feel that the whole experience was very meaningful and I had definately learnt something new there.

Leonard's Reflections 5/8
This is the third and final day of the IBM Software Technical Conference. After failing my first attempt at the SOA certificate, I started sourcing for more information on SOA and also asked my lecturer, Mr Teo Shin Jen, to give me some advice.
I took the test at 9am and thanks to the JIT (Just in Time) tutorial by Mr Teo and some websites about SOA, I improved my score by 2 percent! Even though it was not a huge improvement, it was an improvement nonetheless. None of the previous paper’s questions were repeated either.
After the test, I went for a lecture about the new features of Omnibus 7.3.0. The technical terms used during the lecture were very complicated and I had a hard time understanding the topic. After lunch, I went for a lecture about Cognos 8.0 and SOA. I learned a lot during the lecture, like the architecture of Cognos 8.0, the advantages it provides to businesses and how it works to provide the services to the business companies.

Leonard's Reflections 4/8
This is Day 2 of the IBM Technical Software Conference. I attended more lectures about Tivoli : Deploying a Service Desk Quickly and Network Configuration and Change Management and Compliance Management.
I learned about topics like Quick Deployment, ITIL Processes, Tivoli Service Request Memory (TSRM), Tivoli Foundations Software Appliances (TFSM), Policy Based Compliance Management (PBCM) and Tivoli Netcool Configuration Manager (TNCM) during the lectures.
After trying out the lectures, I became confident and decided to try out one of my attempts at the IBM certification. I chose to attempt the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) test, the passing mark was 66% and there were 54 questions in the paper. Even though I only scored 25 questions right in the test, it has inspired me to work harder in the future lectures to pass my second attempt at the test.
My final lecture for the day was Birds of Feather with Architects. It was a free asking session about Websphere Application Server (WAS) with five IBM experts and the audience at the lecture asked many useful questions and the experts responded with very enlightening information. Personally, I feel that I have learned more from this session than from some of the lectures. One of the questions the audience asked was an Infinite Thread problem where he wanted to terminate his program without restarting his WAS. The source of the problem was found to be a Hung Thread, since the enquirer’s WAS was standalone, he could not avoid restarting his WAS. Only if the WAS was in a cluster then he could terminate the program without restarting the WAS as other nodes will be able to run the thread. The lecturer even made a joke about the “Ostrich method” as a way to solve the problem : Bury your head in the ground and pretend nothing happened.
That is the end of day 2 and another interesting day of learning. Tomorrow will be the last day of the conference before the return to Singapore!

Day 2 at IBM Conference
We start off the day with a lecture on how a Service Desk can benefit us and how does it work. I feel that this lecture has benefited me as I have learnt about the basic of implementing a Service Desk. Furthermore, from this lecture, I know the methods and ways of how to implement the Service Desk technology. This method can also be applied when we do our larger-scale projects. Hence, I find it very beneficial to me.

From this test, I realised that the certification test for IBM is not very easy, it takes effort and time to study for and prepare for the test. It is a good experience for me to experience the test taking for an IBM certification, as it is a rare opportunity to actually go for and take the test in IBM context. I had fun taking the IBM certification even though I did not have good results from the test.
Thinking I could take up the challenge, I went to attend an advanced lecture by WebSphere. Even though it was an advanced lecture, I actually enjoyed this lecture as the speaker and his team did a very good job. This lecture was not a teaching session but rather a question and answer session. Although I do not really understand the product that they are discussing, but I had really learnt a lot from this session. The professionals and the speaker shared their experience with one another. I really enjoyed the session and would like to attend future such sessions. I feel that the speakers are also very approachable, for example, Mr Ernese Norelus even stayed back for a while to explain to us some of the basic context of the WebSphere software.
Overall, I feel that today was a great day. I have learnt a lot and I hope to learn more tomorrow.

Today is a day that made me realises that I have to know more before I try anything.
It felt like I was back to my secondary school days when I went to sat for the paper and I was completely blank.
The feeling of helplessness always never failed to push me harder.

Reflections/2nd Conference Day
Today's program was a little different as compared to yesterday for us. First we attended a lecture on another Tivoli product. After that we studied and prepared for a certification test. Then we had lunch before going for our test.
We were just going for the test for the experience as we were quite new to the products and so we were basically just "trying our luck". This was how I felt about taking the test. Mostly, the questions on the concept of the product i could answer but when it came to other types of questions, I was totally lost.
After the test, we wanted to try another kind of lecture. Yesterday, all the lectures we took were all for "beginners". However, we tried attending a lecture for "advanced" people. It was kind of a scary gamble as I thought we were going to be totally clueless about it. Apparently we were.
However, the whole session was actually a Q&A session where the advanced people using the products can ask any questions to the experts about the product. Although, we did not use the product but we tried our best to visualise what kind of problems they were facing. So, it wasn't really a waste of time. It was quite interesting as we saw how the experts tackle the problems the users faced and how they answered their questions.
On the whole, I thought that going for the advanced lectures were not as bad as we were thought as after that, we had a few questions to ask them too as the product was related to the test we did earlier on and they did manage to answer them.

Fortunate choice
Today, we had a rare Q&A session. We were advised to stick with the agenda given to us, which consisted of only beginner. We got too bored with the beginner lectures as the stuff that was taught consisted of a lot of technical topics. The Q&A was labelled under the advanced category. We decided to give it a try than to just stick with the agenda. It was a BIG SURPRISE!!! When we thought it is a lecture, it turned out to be a Q&A session about IBM’s new product. It was the most interesting lesson for the past days. The conversation between the consumers and the consultant was very exciting and kept me engaged for the whole duration. The session was beneficial and I learnt quite a few new things. I feel that it was a fortune that we went for the “Advanced” session

Dear Blog
Today starts with better food than yesterday. Today is one of the most enriching time for me. Exposure to WAS and Network Configuration helped nurture in me some interest and given me valuable knowledge.
Test on SOA (Service-oriented application) was bad. Certification really motivate us to study. Though I did my last minute revision, my results were still bad. I didn’t perform checking for my paper. I was urgent for natural’s call. This ruins my whole paper and through this I reflect deeply; no more drinks, and a need to wear a jacket for warmth.
Overall day has been pretty fruitful. Technical terms was absorbed. An example was about the point to point connection instead using a common point, ESB. They were patient and was keen to have a free session for us. I hope they do it out of their love for our interests. Days ended with us frantically using this short time to write our reflection. Tired and beat from the lectures and a debate class, we need to get ourselves once again charged up and faced tomorrow with a cheerful and energetic mindset.

IBM conf
IBM conference was the first technology-driven conferences I attended and hence it set as a benchmark. Over the past few hours, I have learnt about command prompt commands as well as IBM products. I totally agreed with what they mentioned that the world is connected but hardly integrated. Technology is driven by businesses and competition keeps innovation going. Technology acts as a problem solver as shown by case studies of 6 different companies, including the Indonesian Bank. Overall, we mostly learned about their products, with little reference to the problems the people encountered. However I did learned some about the data deduplication; the server and the clients. Although to us. the year 1, is pretty challenging, we managed to get the idea of the concept. This day ended with a presentation that tells us technology helps and improves different aspects of our life including KPI. As what Mr teo mentioned, learn with an open heart. That helps a lot. Let’s not miss out food. The meals was tnot o my liking. Fine, that’s was just my preferences. After the adaptation we have from Day1, Day2 will even be a better day. Can’t wait to get home.

xinyi day 1
I enjoyed the free labs session which was about the websphere! Especially the lecture who taught us about how the concept of box and outline method works. It is better to take a look at the lesson that we learnt from him in the following video!
By the way I would like to share about what is Master Data Management! What is Master Data?
It is the key fact describing your core business entities, customers, partners, employees, products, list of accounts and location.
What is not a Master Data? All the data within enterprise such as transaction data and billing data are not master data.
Name and address are as they do not change regularly! I find it so astonishing since during Principle of Accounts (POA) in my secondary school and I enjoyed POA!
IBM Conference Day 1
Today was the first day of the IBM Software Technical Conference. It started with an opening speech by high-ranking personals of IBM, giving us a overview of how the world is benefiting from IBM and that how the IBM has benefited the various companies around the world. Case studies of a flowers company, telecommunications company, bus company and a power company were also shared with us. They were successive stories of the projects that IBM had done.
I started the IBM conference track by going to the Tivoli track listening to a lecture on ”Performance Visibility for IP Network in Large Enterprise using TNPM” I learnt a lot from this lecture about how the Tivoli Network Program Management works and how it can be applied to our programming computers. Learning about the ONMIbus of the Tivoli software is my next lecture.
Lunch was very interesting for me. We get to mix around with the other people attending the IBM conference. Talk to then about why they attend the conference and other stuffs. I also get to chat with an ex-SP student from maritime engineering who is now a country manager of the software group services of the IBM, Mr Raymond Wong.
I also attended the sharing session on the case study of an Indonesian Bank whereby a Thai speaker talked to us about the project that they do to help the Indonesian Bank using the Master Data Management (MDM) and the Rapid Development Package (RDP). We also know how this project had benefited the Indonesian Bank.
Lab session was very fun for me. I learnt the basic of the WebSphere software from Mr Ernese Norelus who patiently taught us the basic concept of the WebSphere softeware. He even when the extra mile to simplify what is needed to be taught in 5 days to a half an hour session for me and my group.
Mr Raymond Wong further gave us a lecture on how the world is getting smarter with IBM and that how IBM can relate to the world. Giving us a more detailed and simplier to understand of the overview of the IBM conference.

Also, i learned some extra information like 15 pedabytes of data are created/year. IBM is now working towards a smarter world by creating "smarter" software.

I learnt about the how they used a product to check and manage performance. They use Simple Network Management Protocol to help give them visibility, control and automation. And they use Tivoli Netcool Performance Manager for fault management.
Also, I attended another lecture where we had a case study on an indonesian bank. I learnt what master data and rapid development package is. I also learnt how they helped an indonesian bank solve some of their problems. I learnt of the projects they took and the workshops they conducted for the employees.
After that, we had another small "lecture" by Mr Raymond Wong. He told us more about what IBM like their goals. He shared with us one of IBM's goal which is to make the world "smarter".
Day 1 Conference Morning
The first lecture of the conference was about the software Tivoli. It basically shows us how data is sent and how the bandwidth of the network is consumed. This software can help us to find out which program on our computer is using up too much bandwidth, causing the Internet to lag.

Today was the first day of the IBM Software Technical Conference. To begin the conference, there was a keynote speech by Ms Katie Keane. We had the choice of going to our own tracks after the speech so i chose Performance Visibility for IP Network in Large Enterprise using TNPM for my first track.
In the lecture, we learned about performance management which collects periodic metrics and can be used to detect real time threshold violations. Other information we learned was Simple Network Management Protocol(SNMP), Management Information Base(MIB), Tivoli Netcool Performance Manager (TNPM) and COTS(Commercially-off-the-shelf) Tech Packs.
Our next lecture included topics like Network Visibility, IBM Service Management, Consolidated Operations Management, Tivoli Omnibus and Network Manager and a case study about ONO, a company in Spain.
During our lunch, we met up with some of the IBM conference lecturers who gave us advice about the different tracks. Since i was in Info-communication Technology, i was recommended the Tivoli track which had the most reference to my course of study.
After lunch, there was a case study lecture about an Indonesian Bank IBM had helped to complete a project. For the lecture, we were taught about Master Data, Master Data Management, Party-Centric Model, Rapid Deployment Package and the Indonesian Rule Set. IBM took 6 months to complete the project for the bank, even though they spent almost 2 months just to transfer the new equipment into the data center.
I chose to go to the free labs for my next lesson and tried out the Websphere Technical Exchange lab. After experiencing some difficulty and getting some assistance from a lecturer, i learned how to apply and use the concept of the Box Method and Outline Method.
At the end of the day's conference, we had a briefing by Mr Raymond Wong who taught us about the Smarter Planet vision.
I learned a lot on the first day of the conference and i am looking forward to the next day of learning.
